The Graph activated x402 payments within its Graph Gateway on May 12, enabling developers and artificial intelligence agents to purchase on-chain data queries on a pay-per-request basis using USDC.
The integration, announced on the project's official X account, adopts the x402 machine payment standard, which is now managed by the Linux Foundation with backing from Google, AWS, and Visa. This provides a layer of industry standardization to the new payment functionality.
The new gateway allows for a "pay-as-you-go" model for data access, a significant shift from traditional, subscription-based API pricing. This structure is designed for the high-frequency, low-value transactions typical of machine-to-machine commerce, potentially lowering the barrier to entry for developers who do not require bulk data plans.
This move places The Graph directly into the rapidly developing infrastructure race for agentic payments. The launch follows recent announcements of similar machine-payment solutions from Circle with its Agent Stack, a partnership between AWS and Coinbase using the same x402 protocol, and a Google Cloud gateway for the Solana network. The Graph is now positioned to compete as a core data provider for this emerging automated economy.
