Shoals Technologies Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: SHLS) opened a new 638,000-square-foot manufacturing campus in Portland, Tennessee, significantly expanding its domestic production capacity for electrical components vital to the U.S. energy transition and data center infrastructure. The initial $30 million investment aims to bolster the American supply chain as demand for solar and battery storage systems accelerates.
"As demand for energy infrastructure continues to accelerate, this new Mega Facility allows Shoals to scale alongside our customers and meet the needs of a rapidly evolving energy landscape," Brandon Moss, chief executive officer at Shoals, said in a statement. "By expanding our domestic manufacturing footprint and bringing increased capacity, we are strengthening the American energy supply chain and enabling faster, more efficient energy deployment."
The new plant, located at 1500 Shoals Way, consolidates three of the company’s existing Tennessee facilities into a single, highly automated location. Backed by a total planned investment of up to $80 million over five years, the facility will manufacture electrical infrastructure solutions for utility-scale solar projects, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and mission-critical facilities like data centers. The opening also marks the company’s 30th anniversary.
The investment comes as U.S. companies seek to de-risk their supply chains and reduce dependence on overseas manufacturing, particularly from China. Beijing has tightened export controls over advanced battery production technology, making it more difficult for international firms to secure full lithium-ion cell production know-how. Shoals' expansion of domestic component manufacturing positions the company to capitalize on this onshoring trend, which is supported by federal policies like the Inflation Reduction Act.
Boosting Domestic Capacity
The move by Shoals reflects a broader strategic shift within the U.S. clean energy sector to build out a robust domestic manufacturing base. While companies like Reliance Industries in India are reportedly navigating complex sourcing agreements for battery components from Chinese firms such as CATL, Shoals is focusing on increasing its own production capacity on U.S. soil. This strategy not only mitigates geopolitical and logistical risks but also aligns with government incentives designed to promote American manufacturing.
The new mega facility is expected to leverage increased automation in production and packaging to improve operational efficiencies. This will be critical as the company scales to meet rising demand from the solar, BESS, and data center markets, all ofwhich are experiencing rapid growth. As part of the facility's inauguration, Shoals also donated $20,000 to Hands of Hope, a local charity, to help provide meals in the Portland and Sumner County area.
