Quantum Computing Inc. shares have an average analyst price target of $18.33, implying 111% upside after Microsoft accelerated its post-quantum security timeline.
"QCi has legitimate quantum assets across photonics, compute, security and sensing," John McPeake, analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, said.
Microsoft Azure Chief Technology Officer Mark Russinovich said the company now aims to transition products and services to post-quantum cryptography by 2029, citing the "harvest now, decrypt later" threat where attackers collect encrypted data today for future decryption. QUBT traded near $8.75 on Thursday. Ascendiant Capital's Edward Woo reiterated a Buy rating and raised his price target to $30 from $27, saying revenue expectations appear achievable based on management conversations and acquisition-led growth. Lake Street maintained a Buy rating and $16 target after QUBT completed its NHanced Semiconductors acquisition, though the firm noted the financial contribution has not yet been quantified. Cantor Fitzgerald set a $10 low target.
The wide gap between the $8.75 trading price and the $18.33 consensus target reflects the speculative nature of the quantum security trade. QUBT's portfolio spans integrated photonics, quantum optics, cybersecurity, sensing and secure communications, bolstered by its March acquisition of NuCrypt for $5 million and the NHanced deal in June. The company said NHanced provides a foundation for scalable chip manufacturing of its quantum and photonics technologies.
Microsoft's warning shifts post-quantum security from a research debate to an enterprise budget item, according to the company. The transition plan focuses on TLS 1.3 adoption, crypto-agility for stored data and modernized cryptographic trust chains for identity and code signing. Organizations in regulated industries and critical infrastructure are already prioritizing protection of long-lived sensitive data, Russinovich said.
For holders, the Microsoft catalyst provides a macro tailwind, but QUBT must convert its acquisitions into recurring enterprise revenue to justify the consensus target. The next catalyst is the company's quarterly update, where investors will look for revenue contribution from the NHanced and NuCrypt deals.
