Dan Niles calls Meta Platforms a re-rating candidate after a 12.57% year-to-date gain that trails the megacap group, arguing two September product launches prove its capital spending can earn money outside the ad auction.
The Niles Investment Management founder pointed to the enterprise API Meta released about two weeks ago and the Muse AI agent that launched roughly a week ago as evidence the company can monetize infrastructure beyond advertising. "There will continue to be a significantly higher margin on selling intelligence rather than selling compute directly," Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said.
Meta rose 11.43% in a single session on September 21 to $741.25, its largest one-day move of the year, yet the stock is still down 4.4% over the past 12 months. That combination — one outsized session, a modest year, a negative twelve months — is the setup Niles describes as a re-rating candidate rather than a compounder about to accelerate. The shares trade at roughly 27 times earnings with a 30.2% return on equity and an 82% gross margin, while revenue grew 27.96% year over year to $60.8 billion.
The re-rating argument rests on a gap between those operating metrics and the market's treatment of Meta's capital budget. The company has committed $130 billion to $145 billion of 2026 capital expenditure, and investors had no external revenue attached to it until this month. The enterprise API and Muse change that narrative without changing the income statement yet.
The second-quarter print explains why the market discounted the spend. Diluted earnings per share of $6.18 missed the $7.22 consensus on July 29, breaking a six-quarter beat streak. Operating margin compressed to 31% from 43% after $2.40 billion in legal charges and $1.18 billion of severance tied to an 8,000-employee headcount reduction. Free cash flow fell to $784 million against $30.12 billion of capital expenditure, up 82.1% year over year. Long-term debt reached $83.66 billion to fund the buildout.
Advertising still carries the company. Meta Platforms Chief Financial Officer Susan Li disclosed that Advantage Plus advertising solutions reached more than $75 billion in annual revenue run rate, and that over 1 million businesses use business agents weekly on WhatsApp and Messenger. The ad engine compounds on 14% impression growth and 12% growth in price per ad, with 3.60 billion daily users anchoring the funnel.
Enterprise revenue is the only number that settles this
The bull case requires external AI revenue to become visible before the fixed-cost base outgrows it. Meta's 2026 total expense guidance of $165 billion to $169 billion assumes capital spending rises faster than any new revenue line can arrive, so the decisive data point is a disclosed run rate for enterprise API usage, business agents, and compute rental — most likely in early 2027.
The bear case is arithmetic. Free cash flow of $784 million against $30.12 billion of quarterly capital expenditure leaves almost no cushion, and the re-rating rests on products with weeks of shipping history. Dan Nathan flagged the durability question directly, saying "these moats are very, very fragile" in consumer AI. Youth-related legal trials could produce charges comparable to the $2.40 billion that compressed second-quarter margins.
Positioning explains the speed of any move rather than its direction. Long-only funds have run underweight Meta, and a stock up 34.89% in a month forces reallocation regardless of the fundamental case. Flows can extend a rally; they cannot substitute for enterprise revenue.
The read-across extends past Meta. Its $130 billion to $145 billion plan lands in the order books of power, cooling, and networking suppliers behind hyperscaler data centers, and the same capex-to-revenue question applies to Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon as each defends a multiple built on AI infrastructure. Wells Fargo raised its Meta price target this week, while Oppenheimer's internet team questioned whether Muse can justify the premium the market is pricing.
Meta reports third-quarter results in late October. Watch for any first disclosure of external AI revenue, the trajectory of free cash flow against capital expenditure, and whether Zuckerberg repeats the margin-on-intelligence framing on the call. Until a run rate appears, the multiple gap is a perception argument, not a valuation one.
