Ford is recalling 741,195 vehicles in the US over a transmission defect that can damage the park system and cause unintended rollaway, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday.
"The affected vehicles may have a transmission condition that can result in unintended vehicle movement," NHTSA said. Dealers will update the software and inspect and replace any damaged transmission components free of charge.
The recall covers certain 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition models, 2020-2021 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles, and 2021 F-150 pickups. Separately, Ford is recalling 36,046 Bronco models over improperly secured fender flares that can detach and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash, NHTSA said. Dealers will inspect and repair or replace the fender flares as needed at no cost.
The recalls add to Ford's quality challenges as the automaker works to reduce warranty costs and improve reliability. The 741,195-vehicle park system recall ranks among the largest for the Dearborn, Michigan-based company in recent years. Ford shares will face pressure as investors assess the financial impact of remediation costs and potential legal claims tied to the defect. The company's next quarterly earnings report, expected in late July, will provide the first detailed look at how the recalls affect Ford's warranty reserve and bottom line.
