Traders who bought Excelland Robot (03231.HK) in Hong Kong's gray market are sitting on a paper gain of HK$15.25 a share, after the robotics company's off-exchange session finished at HK$29.70 against an offer price of HK$14.45, two days before its Main Board debut on 9 September.
The gray-market print, which tracks off-exchange dealing in the days before a listing, opened down 3.3% at HK$13.98 before swinging between HK$13.01 and HK$30.28, according to Futu data. PhillipMart recorded a flat open at HK$14.45 on 1.12 million shares and HK$29.6 million of turnover.
The two platforms diverged on the size of the move but not its direction. Futu showed 1.92 million shares changing hands for HK$48.62 million, with the HK$15.25 gain per share equating to a book profit of HK$3,050 per board lot of 200 shares before fees. PhillipMart's figures implied HK$3,082 per lot.
Gray-market turnover of that scale is thin relative to a typical Main Board debut, which means the 105.5% premium reflects a small pool of retail orders rather than broad institutional demand. The intraday range of HK$13.01 to HK$30.28 — a spread of more than 130% between the low and the high — points to the same thinness.
The wider Hong Kong listing tape has been uneven. Goldman Sachs cut its target price on Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (00388.HK) to HK$532 while maintaining a buy rating, a signal that the exchange operator's own earnings outlook is being marked down even as new listings queue up.
For investors who received allocations, the gray-market close implies a paper gain of roughly 105% on day one if the premium holds at the open. The first test comes at 9:30 a.m. Hong Kong time on 9 September, when the stock's opening print will show whether the gray-market bid was genuine demand or a handful of orders in a market with no depth.
