Security software stocks absorbed the market's AI anxiety Monday, with CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. climbing 12% to $232.08, Zscaler Inc. rising 12% to $183.97 and Palo Alto Networks Inc. gaining 11% to $366.40 in midday trading, as weekend warnings from two frontier AI lab chief executives pushed capital out of chipmakers and into the group.
"The bull case for CrowdStrike is that faster, AI-driven attacks expand security budgets regardless of how quickly frontier models advance," George Kurtz, chief executive of CrowdStrike, said in remarks responding to Anthropic's essay over the weekend. Kurtz argued that frontier laboratories will keep advancing their technology regardless of any single company's decision, and that the security industry's job is to make that development safer.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a 3,800-word essay Saturday calling on frontier AI companies to slow the pace at which they improve model capabilities so risk prevention can keep up, according to Yahoo Finance. Amodei wrote, "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of A.I. models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain." OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he agreed and followed with a post early Monday warning about losing control of the future to AI and about too much concentration of power.
The same words cut the other way in hardware. Networking, cloud-infrastructure and storage names fell, with Nokia down 9.5%, Corning down 9.0%, Hewlett Packard Enterprise down 8.0% and Seagate Technology down 6.5%, while chip and semiconductor-equipment shares sold off: Lam Research fell 8.0%, KLA 7.0%, Applied Materials 7.0%, Intel 6.5%, Advanced Micro Devices 5.5% and Nvidia 2.5%. The First Trust Nasdaq Cybersecurity ETF rose 4%, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust fell 0.7%, leaving the pure-play security names running well ahead of the sector fund and its wider networking and infrastructure membership.
The bid is concentrated in three names, not the whole sector
Okta Inc. joined the move as the identity-security peer to the group, with management having positioned agent identity as a durable AI-security opportunity on its most recent call. Enterprise software broadly caught a rotation bid as well, with ServiceNow up 4.6%, Cognizant Technology Solutions up 3.4%, Accenture up 3.0% and Salesforce up 2.8%.
The year-to-date figures show how little the move discriminates between the three leaders. CrowdStrike is up 98% year to date and Palo Alto is up 99%, while Zscaler is down 18%. All three rose by similar amounts Monday, which points to money entering the security category as a block rather than to any judgment about which business benefits most from an AI-driven threat environment.
CrowdStrike carries a company-specific element on top of the sector flow. The Kurtz remarks followed the company's Fal.Con conference, where it introduced Falcon Guardian, SafeMind and an Agentic Identity Provider, and analysts at RBC Capital, Raymond James and Wedbush each reiterated positive ratings and raised their price targets on the stock after the event.
The fundamental record behind the re-rating is real but slower than the share move. CrowdStrike reported record net new ARR of $332.8 million in Q2 FY27, when total revenue grew 25.8% year over year to $1.47 billion. Management raised its net new ARR growth outlook by 630 basis points with that update and guides to full-year FY27 revenue of $5.991 billion to $6.011 billion. For Q3 FY27, the company guides to revenue of $1.523 billion to $1.529 billion and non-GAAP diluted EPS of $0.31.
What would confirm the move
The next scheduled test is CrowdStrike's Q3 FY27 report, which can show whether the AI safety narrative is translating into net new ARR alongside the Q2 figure. Zscaler rising just as much while sitting on a full-year loss is the detail that makes this look like a sentiment move rather than a fundamental one, and sentiment moves of this size can unwind as fast as they arrive. For anyone chasing the bid after a run of nearly 100% on the year, sizing exposure to match the stock's volatility is the practical response.
