Circle Internet Financial on April 17 launched its USDC Bridge, a new platform enabling native cross-chain transfers of its USDC stablecoin with 0% fees through a burn-and-mint mechanism.
"The USDC Bridge is designed to unify liquidity and provide a secure, official channel for USDC transfers across ecosystems," a Circle spokesperson said in a statement. "This burn-and-mint process ensures that native USDC is moved, rather than locking assets in a traditional bridge contract."
The bridge facilitates the transfer of USDC by burning the tokens on the source blockchain and minting an equivalent amount on the destination chain. This method avoids the risks associated with third-party bridges that often rely on wrapped tokens and fragmented liquidity. The initial launch supports transfers between Ethereum and other integrated blockchains, with more networks to be added. The service will be accessible via a dedicated web application.
The launch of an official bridge is a strategic move by Circle to position USDC as a core piece of crypto infrastructure, a centralizing a significant portion of cross-chain stablecoin volume. This could increase the utility and adoption of USDC within decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, enhancing capital efficiency. However, it also poses a direct challenge to third-party bridging solutions that currently capture a share of the market for USDC transfers. The development reinforces the trend of stablecoin issuers building out their own infrastructure to control the user experience and security of their tokens across a multi-chain environment.
