Buterin Probes AI Group's Political Shift After $500M Payout
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has publicly questioned the Future of Life Institute (FLI) after the AI safety organization pivoted toward political action. In a post on X, Buterin stated he wanted to "clear the record" regarding his connection to FLI's policy initiatives. The statement follows the organization's successful liquidation of SHIB tokens he donated in 2021. Buterin noted he initially expected the tokens to be worth a maximum of $10-$25 million, but FLI managed to convert the donation into approximately $500 million.
Donation Originated from 2021 Meme Coin Marketing Frenzy
The funds trace back to 2021, when the founder of Shiba Inu, known as Ryoshi, sent Buterin half of the initial one quadrillion SHIB supply. Buterin believed this, along with other unsolicited airdrops of dog-themed coins, was a marketing gimmick to boost their value. Anticipating the bubble would "pop quickly," he decided to rapidly sell what he could and donate the proceeds to various causes, including FLI and the Crypto Relief initiative in India. In addition to the donations, Buterin also permanently removed roughly 410 trillion SHIB from circulation by sending them to a burn address, a move that significantly reduced the token's total supply.
Controversy Spotlights Crypto Philanthropy Accountability
This event has ignited a broader discussion on the transparency and accountability of large-scale cryptocurrency donations. The significant discrepancy between the donation's expected and actual value, coupled with its subsequent use for political purposes, highlights potential governance challenges for charitable foundations managing volatile digital assets. The controversy could impact sentiment around crypto-related philanthropy, increasing pressure on foundations to establish clearer guidelines for how donated funds, especially those from anonymous or meme-based projects, are managed and deployed.
