WSJ columnist Nicole Nguyen wore four fitness trackers for three weeks and tested them against a clinical sleep study at Stanford — the Apple Watch Series 11 won on accuracy across nearly every metric.
The Apple Watch Series 11 matched a clinical polysomnogram's sleep duration down to the minute and delivered the most reliable heart-rate readings across all activities, outperforming the Oura Ring 5, Fitbit Air and Whoop MG in a three-week comparison by the Wall Street Journal.
"Every scale is calibrated differently — what matters is whether the numbers trend up or down over time," Dr. Rafael Pelayo, a clinical professor of sleep medicine at Stanford Health Care, said after reviewing the results.
The Apple Watch clocked six hours and 52 minutes of sleep — identical to the lab's measurement — and its sleep staging aligned most closely with brain-wave readings. The $100 Fitbit Air finished second, followed by the $399 Oura Ring 5. The Whoop MG misidentified late-night reading as light sleep. All four wearables overestimated deep sleep: the polysomnogram showed 28 minutes, while each device reported more than an hour. Resting heart rate was more consistent — all trackers landed within one beat per minute of the lab, with Oura nailing the exact 59 bpm reading.
The results highlight a widening gap in the $40 billion wearable market between subscription-free devices like the Apple Watch and screenless trackers that lock key biometrics behind monthly fees. Oura charges $6 a month to access detailed data; Whoop requires a $199 annual membership. Apple and Fitbit offer full functionality without recurring costs.
During an indoor cycling test against a chest-strap monitor, all four trackers proved reliable. But the gap widened during outdoor activities. On a bumpy bike ride and a walk with a stroller, only the Apple Watch maintained accuracy. The Whoop matched it only when worn on the bicep rather than the wrist. The Fitbit Air and Oura Ring both faltered during high-movement periods.
Google attributed the Fitbit Air's drift to its lightweight design, which allows more sensor movement during aggressive exercise. Oura noted that gripping a vibrating stroller creates a particular challenge for optical sensors, and acknowledged a potential fit issue — the company sent a size 8 ring instead of the columnist's usual size 7.
App Personalities Diverge on Fitness vs. Recovery
The four devices' apps reflect fundamentally different philosophies. Apple's Health app is the most basic but offers end-to-end encryption. Fitbit's Google Health app includes an AI-powered Health Coach, though the AI tended to over-fixate on specific topics. Whoop's app is dark and data-dense, oriented around strain and training intensity, while Oura emphasizes recovery trends and made the most reliable illness prediction — flagging "major signs" of strain a full day before the columnist woke up feeling sick.
About 90 percent of smart-ring owners also own a smartwatch, according to research firm Circana, suggesting consumers increasingly see these devices as complementary rather than competitive. The columnist settled on the Oura Ring plus Apple Watch as the best combination for long-term trend tracking.
For investors, the comparison underscores Apple's advantage in the premium wearable segment: the Series 11 starts at $399 with no subscription, while Oura and Whoop require ongoing payments that can exceed the hardware cost over time. Fitbit, now under Google, competes at the $100 price point but sacrifices accuracy during intense activity. The wearable market's growth will increasingly depend on which model — subscription or upfront — consumers find more sustainable.
