(New York) — Amazon.com Inc. is escalating its push into the multi-billion dollar pharmacy market, announcing it will offer same-day delivery of Novo Nordisk A/S’s oral Ozempic for type 2 diabetes in 3,000 U.S. cities. The expansion, which leverages Amazon's vast logistics network, directly challenges the prescription fulfillment dominance of CVS Health Corp. and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc.
"We are making it easy for customers to get the medication they need to stay healthy," said Tanvi Patel, a vice president at Amazon Pharmacy. The company has been aggressively adding popular GLP-1 drugs, a class of medications for diabetes and obesity, to its platform. It began stocking Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drug Wegovy in January and later added Eli Lilly & Co.'s Foundayo pill.
The oral version of Ozempic, which uses the active ingredient semaglutide, will be available for $149 per month for customers paying with cash, or as low as $25 for those with insurance. Amazon's existing infrastructure allows for same-day delivery to half of its U.S. customers, a capability it plans to extend to 4,500 locales by the end of 2026. Unlike injectable versions that require refrigeration, the pill's stability allows it to be stocked in Amazon's automated pharmacy kiosks, five of which are currently active in California One Medical locations.
This move is highly bullish for both Amazon and Novo Nordisk. For Amazon, it strengthens its position in the lucrative online pharmacy market with high-demand products. For Novo Nordisk, it dramatically expands the distribution and accessibility of its key drugs. This could negatively impact traditional pharmacy chains by increasing competition and potentially eroding their market share in prescription drug delivery. The expansion is part of a more than $4 billion investment by Amazon last year to enhance its delivery network, with a focus on smaller cities and rural areas.
