Algorand (ALGO) jumped more than 7 percent on May 20, leading a broader rally in cryptocurrencies associated with artificial intelligence as the sector narrative continues to build momentum. The rally, which also saw gains in smaller tokens like SERV, BNKR, and VVV, occurred as the total crypto market cap held steady above $2.54 trillion.
The advance in AI-related tokens reflects a growing conviction in the theme, which extends beyond speculative interest to include foundational platforms like Ethereum. "Ethereum’s role in tokenization and agentic artificial intelligence remains intact," BitMine Chairman Tom Lee said, separating the long-term structural case from short-term market pressures. BitMine is the largest public company holder of ETH, with more than 5.2 million tokens.
The rally found support from a cross-asset rotation, with the S&P 500 closing down 0.67 percent on May 19, pushing some capital into digital assets. Bitcoin (BTC) traded flat around $77,106, while Ethereum (ETH) tested the $2,100 level. However, the relief may be fragile, as the US 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.19 percent on May 19, its highest since 2007, signaling potential stress for risk assets.
If the AI narrative continues to draw capital, it could signal a more thematic risk appetite returning to crypto markets. The sector's performance is increasingly tied to specific use cases, with AI and the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs) emerging as two of the most durable trends heading into the second half of 2026.
AI Narrative Gains Traction
The rally on May 20 is the latest sign that the AI narrative is not a fleeting trend. For months, tokens linked to AI projects have been grinding higher, attracting both retail and sophisticated investors. The performance of ALGO, which is developing infrastructure for AI-powered applications, highlights how established blockchains are also benefiting from the trend.
This contrasts with other thematic rallies that have quickly faded. The sustained interest suggests investors are looking beyond memecoins and focusing on projects with potential for long-term utility, particularly those integrating AI with decentralized finance (DeFi) and other on-chain activities.
Ethereum's AI Connection
While smaller tokens are seeing significant percentage gains, Ethereum's connection to the AI thesis provides a foundational anchor for the entire sector. According to a recent CryptoSlate report, analysts see Ethereum as a key beneficiary of the growth in "agentic AI," where autonomous software agents require decentralized rails for transactions and data verification.
Grayscale has also described tokenization, another area where Ethereum dominates, as a major investment opportunity. With the on-chain market value of real-world assets already surpassing $38 billion, Ethereum's infrastructure is positioned to capture a significant share of this expanding market. This dual-engine growth story—AI and tokenization—underpins the long-term bullish outlook for Ethereum and, by extension, the broader AI crypto ecosystem.
